At the Discovery Center for Learning, our goal is to help students Discover their Potential. We believe in whole-brain, whole-body learning where kids are involved in lessons. Research shows that when students are engaged in authentic activities that foster creativity and curiosity, they retain more content.
PARENT PARTNERSHIP:
We partner with parents who are homeschooling by offering weekly add-on classes for students in Grades 1st - 8th to supplement their at-home instruction. Parents remain in charge of Math and Reading instruction at home, while we provide in-depth Science and Social Studies support. However, our lessons will integrate reading and writing in the content area to complement what parents initiate at home.
Our Parent Resource Room is open weekly to assist parents in providing curriculum and materials to use at home.
LOWER GRADES:
In 1st - 5th grades, we value small group instruction with hands-on activities and project-based learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions and explore options as they dive deeper into understanding how and why things work. We are not driven by grades or testing because we firmly believe that our kids are not "standardized!" We do maintain a Checklist of Skills that will show what your child knows or needs.
MIDDLE SCHOOL:
Our Leadership Academy for grades 6th-8th offers a unique blend of direct instruction along with the University Model giving students some independence with accountability. All 4 core subject areas are taught by certified teachers who specialize in Math, Reading, Science, and History. Regular progress reports are provided to families. Goal-setting and progress tracking is required of all our students in middle school. We provide regular opportunities for leadership encouraging student mentors to take an active role in helping younger students.
